How to register for Corporation Tax

Corporation Tax is tax levied on your companies profits this includes doing business, investments and selling assets. If you have a UK Limited company you will be liable for Corporation Tax from all of its profits in the UK and abroad.

You need to register for Corporation Tax within 3 months of doing business this includes buying, selling, advertising, renting a property and employing someone.

How to register for Corporation Tax

Firstly HMRC will send to your registered company address your company’s 10 digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) within a few days of the company being registered. You can then register online.

You will need

  • Company number (found on your ‘Certificate of Incorporation’)

  • Business start date (your first accounting period will start from this date)

  • Date your annual accounts are made up to

  • 10 digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) stated on all letters from HMRC and within online services

Once you have registered HMRC will tell you the deadline for your Corporation Tax. By this deadline you’ll need to file a Company Tax Return even if you make a loss or have no tax to pay. That's all you need to know to get yourself registered and ready to go.
